Have you ever felt a strange, uncanny feeling while standing in an empty room, that kind of makes you nostalgic? Then, you were most definitely in a "liminal space."

A liminal space is an environment that evokes a sense of unease or nostalgia when witnessed. These places sometimes consist of airports, hallways or stores after hours. They are transitory environments that are not designed for individuals to spend much time in, other than for passage through to another place. They are familiar and unsettling all at the same time.

Liminal spaces became a viral internet phenomenon, popularized around 2019. People make videos, share photos and even create music in order to evoke this eerie and universal feeling. A ubiquitous feeling that individuals share when viewing the aesthetic movement is an astounding sense of nostalgia, also referred to as "anemoia," which is a longing for a time one has never experienced before.

Corridors and alleyways are very common examples of liminal spaces. Part of its allure is that in these photos, no other human beings are seen. Viewers often feel an impulse to think that there is someone hiding in the shadows, just out of view. Another example is of a children's playground or waterpark.

A lot of these photos feel suspicious to viewers, as playgrounds are both nostalgia-inducing and creepy when they are not populated with families.

The liminal is a place devoid of life, in between "what was" and "what will be." Here are 25 photos that will surely evoke this strange feeling within you.
