Known as the "Tony Stark Head Turn" or "Iron Man Looking" meme, the scene of Robert Downey Jr. has become a prevalent way to convey recognition, suspicion or a smug realization.
The moment dates back to promotional material released for Avengers: Endgame in April 2019, shortly before the film premiered. It was then repurposed into a reaction format and has continued to circulate over the years as an image, GIF and short video in numerous memes.
In 2026, the reaction saw a major resurgence on TikTok and Instagram amid renewed attention surrounding the rerelease of Avengers: Endgame as Endgame Encore, so here's how the clip of Tony Stark became a viral meme and why it's making a comeback years later.
Where Does The 'Tony Stark Head Turn' Meme Come From?
The Tony Stark Head Turn reaction comes from the "Whatever It Takes" scene in Avengers: Endgame, released on April 26th, 2019.
In the scene, Tony Stark has returned to Earth after being stranded in space and is physically weakened while sitting at the Avengers compound and speaking with Steve Rogers (Captain America).
During their conversation, Stark briefly turns his head and looks to the side, producing the expression later isolated for use as a reaction format.
The earliest known use of the image as a meme came on April 22nd, 2019, when X / Twitter user @amidalastark posted the screenshot alongside an image of the Stark family from Game of Thrones, encouraging users to "retweet to protect the starks this week." The post received roughly 88,000 likes in seven years.
The format continued to appear sporadically after the film's release, popping up in random jokes, memes and simple reactions heading into the 2020s.

@memestypeshiiii 🎬 Fun Fact: Avengers: Endgame (2019) This scene is from the famous moment when Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) reunites with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) after the five-year time jump. The conversation and the characters’ subtle, yet profound exchange of emotions--especially Captain America’s look of silent worry and Iron Man’s knowing glance--were largely shaped by the decades of real-life friendship and working partnership between the two lead actors. Their natural, unscripted chemistry made their on-screen relationship, which defined the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe up to that point, feel deeply authentic, elevating this brief interaction from simple dialogue to a powerful reunion. #memes #ironman #funny #avengers #fyp
