Jimothy first went viral back in mid-July 2026, after Instagram user Kiana Hall shared a video of the raccoon running through her backyard in Washington state.
In the caption, Hall jokingly celebrated the unexpected visit from "Jimothy the raccoon with short spine syndrome," introducing the animal by name as the clip quickly amassed hundreds of thousands of likes over the following days.
Jimothy's distinctive appearance is caused by short spine syndrome, a rare developmental condition in which the vertebrae are fused or compressed.
The condition gives affected animals a noticeably shorter and rounder body than normal and can reduce mobility, although it is not always painful.

Why Did Jimothy Go Viral, And How Is He Used In Memes Online?
Following the original Instagram post, videos of Jimothy were widely reposted across X / Twitter, TikTok and other social media platforms, where users described him as unusually cute and endearing.
Additional footage soon surfaced, including new sightings of Jimothy around Seattle and even older videos showing him as a baby before his internet fame.
