These Chickens Carved Their Own Pumpkins, And The Wholesome Video Is Going Viral
A couple has gone viral on TikTok and Instagram for using an unusual method to make a Jack-o'-lantern this Halloween, letting their chickens carve a pumpkin.
The video, which follows a popular trend that's been growing in recent years, shows their chickens hard at work, and a squirrel shows up to help as well. The carving has a pretty satisfying result, and the comments show the animals featured in the video some love.
Chicken pumpkin carving has become somewhat of a fall trend on social media in recent years, with many people trying it with their own chickens to varying levels of success. This year, Molly Katherine and her partner J.A. Harrison decided to do this trend soon after fall started, posting their video on September 25th.
Katherine, who goes by @scarlettohair on TikTok, is an influencer who posts about her maximalist style of clothing, hair, makeup and interior decorating. She has gone viral on both TikTok and Instagram several times, and many of her videos have featured Harrison, who is a bartender.
However, their chicken pumpkin-carving video has given them their most recent viral moment, racking up over 8.4 million views on Instagram and 3.7 million views on TikTok in just five days. The video has also garnered hundreds of thousands of likes and thousands of comments.
"It's officially fall! Don't forget to let your chickens carve a pumpkin this year," reads the text over the video as it begins. Katherine sets down a pumpkin on an outdoor table as Harrison stands behind her, as the Halloweentown theme begins to play.
Doing a close-up on the pumpkin, Harrison peels out two circular shapes for its eyes, and then peels out a zig-zag shape beneath them for its mouth. Then, she carves out a triangle in the middle for the pumpkin's nose.
Harrison then sets the pumpkin down in the yard among the chickens, and the following shot shows that the couple has placed seeds on the pumpkin's eyes and nose.
Some chickens quickly approach the pumpkin and begin pecking at the seeds. Soon, more chickens join, and a montage of them pecking the pumpkin plays. The video also briefly focuses on a duck eating seed in the background, uninterested in the pumpkin.
"Some help from a friend!" the text reads, as the video shows the pumpkin now outside the chicken coop and a squirrel with half its body inside the pumpkin, very interested in what's inside.
Then, the video shows how the pumpkin looked after the chickens' and the squirrel's contributions: The eye holes were pretty big, the mouth was significantly deeper, and the nose was almost merging with the mouth.
After it has gotten a bit darker and a few tinier pumpkins were placed around the carved one, the video shows Harrison lowering a lit candle into the pumpkin's inside.
Finally, the video shows the pumpkin with its candle inside and the chickens that had carved it behind it, accompanied by text that reads first "The art and the artists," and then "Tell them how good they did!!!"
In the comments, people praised Katherine and Harrison’s chickens, while others laughed at the appearance of the duck and the squirrel.
While this trend worked out well for Katherine and Harrison, not all who do it are left with a nice, scary pumpkin for Halloween.
The following video from 2023 shows how chickens may not always be the expert carvers the couple’s video shows them to be.
