There are plenty of animals that have become internet celebrities over the years, but none have matched the staying power of cats.

From the earliest viral videos to today's endless stream of memes, reaction images and TikToks, cats have remained one of the internet's favorite sources of entertainment.

But it isn't because they're always graceful. If anything, it's the complete opposite.

Cats have a habit of sitting, stretching and lounging in ways that seem impossible from certain angles. A perfectly ordinary movement can become something completely ridiculous the instant it's captured in a photograph. Add a strange facial expression to the mix, and you end up with the kind of image that demands a second look.

None of these cats are trying to be funny. They just happen to be caught at exactly the right time, resulting in expressions, poses, and perspectives that make them look far stranger than they probably intended.

A camera has a remarkable ability to catch cats at exactly the wrong moment.
