Sometimes being smart is all people have. Being the smartest one in the room is the most important thing for some folks, just like how some want to be the richest or the best dressed. There is nothing wrong with wanting to further your education. Going to school, finding interests and being educated is a great thing to do. There is no reason, though, to flaunt your intelligence everywhere you go, and in turn make sure everyone else knows how dumb they are.

This happens online a lot. These super smart, big-brained individuals like to go around talking about how smart they are and how no one gets them, and also how high their IQ is. It gets to the point where it's just cringeworthy and also just straight-up hard to believe. Reddit's /r/IAmVerySmart is the subreddit that features all of these super smart internet goers and exposes them for being embarrassing. The Average Person Is Dumb

In case it isn't obvious from this list, people really like bland music. Your average person just listens to what they are basically told to listen to either via radio, marketing or social influence and is happy with that. Fair enough, to each their own, but most people simply aren't discerning. This is also why chain restaurants exist and why c action films with Jason Statham make loads of money. What Are They Yapping About?

OP β€’ 3d I'd argue that social awareness makes it worse. I see through the games people play, the superficiality of general social interactions. It's a rather boring and repetitive game to play, on top of the fakeness of it. Society is full of rules and traditions designed to make people compliant and effective. When you see through the rules, when you understand their purpose and meaning, it becomes entirely dull to play by them. I personally need to explore life outside the dullness of normality. But that's not something most people really strive for because normality is safe and secure. Those who understand reality the least need a very strict framework to be able to maneuver life - hence religion. The more someone understands, the more they feel empowered to live outside the safe bounds of normality. Society feels like a prison to me. Because it is. I think what is understandably annoying about the situation you described is the friends' connection to a great job came from one of their parents "hooking them up" rather than earning it via applying and having the best fit for the position. I am completely self-made, so is my partner, and it boils our blood to have had such difficult lives and still live in poverty, while having IQs that are actual genius level combined with excellent work ethic and integrity. Others around us have gotten "hooked up" in so many various ways, and yet nothing random and good ever seems to happen to us. We are happy for others most of the time, but hearing/seeing people enjoying easy lives at the expense of others feels unjust.
