The attention span of children is not that long to begin with, so pairing that with the amount of technology and social media platforms kids have access to makes it troubling to keep their attention in a classroom. As technology and devices become more ingrained into the lives of kids, teachers need to find new ways to connect with their students on a personal level and get them away from their devices and onto learning.
Connecting with kids is not easy. Teachers have struggled with this for years. Kids don't think teachers are cool, and even the so-called cool teachers have kids who struggle. Some teachers have adopted an "if you can't beat them, join them" kind of mindset. They have started incorporating slang and online culture into their classrooms in an attempt to get kids thinking and learning again. This comes with varying results and is sometimes just a bit cringeworthy.
