26 Recipe Reviews From Terrible Cooks

Cooking is a skill everyone needs to have to some degree. Some people are just naturally better at it than others, but there are recipes out there for a reason. Recipes are legitimate lifesavers for some folks, and the people who take the time to write them should be celebrated and cherished. Along with most recipes come their reviews though, and that's where things get wild. In the reviews portion of online recipes, many things can be found, especially people who just need to stay out of the kitchen.

From people making insane alterations in ingredients to people straight-up not following directions, there are so many people exposing themselves for their lack of comprehension skills. These recipes did not deserve these kinds of reviews. Reddit's /r/Ididnthaveeggs is a subreddit where users share all of the worst reviews they have found while scrolling through some online recipes. Here are 26 of them that are so facepalm-worthy it's sad.

Authentic Chinese Food

Andrea 27. October, 2023 at 14:54 Sorry, just thought this was not flavorful. I used agave (why would you use maple syrup in Chinese food?) but otherwise followed the recipe. Really surprised that the garlic and ginger didn't shine through. The cayenne came through more than anything else. REPLY Brendan 1. February, 2024 at 16:46 Why would you use agave in Chinese food? This is literally on of the dumbest comments I've > 685 Q ever seen.

How dare someone use non-natural peanut butter

H Harold Lee Miller | 3 years ago Again, why not natural peanut butter? Just curious, I will use it anyway, as I don't have anything else, and I won't buy anything else. Why would you eat peanut butter mixed with Crisco (hydrogenated vegetable oil)? If the recipe needs the Crisco for some reason, I'm sure it will be just as good without it. I've made any number of peanut sauces like this with natural peanut butter and they're all different and they're all good.

A whole new recipe, in the recipe!

P phillip roullard | 2 years ago Why buy peanut butter when one can make their own? Very easy. You need a food processor first off. 2 cups of roasted, unsalted peanuts, (add salt to taste). 3 tbs. of oil (peanut oil or canola oil) 1 tbs. of honey Whirl the peanuts in the processor with 2tbs. of oil, until it slows down. Break up the mass with a spatula and add the last of the oil. Whirl again and repeat the process, no oil though. Once the mass smooths out add the honey and whirl again until smooth. Yummy stuff!

4 extra hours shouldn't hurt

Beth ✰✰✰ 12/09/2014 12/14: not very good. but i did make a lot of changes. i used half a bottle of siracha instead of a whole one and also added a cup of chicken broth to cover since i was going to be at work for 9 hours and it is only suposed to cook for 5. so it turned out dry and not very flavorabe but PLENTY HOT! I can't afford to see your recipe, which left a bad taste in my mouth, so I made my own directions, with some broccoli pieces roasted at 425-450 and drizzled with garlicky, lemony, lightly salted, lightly spiced, slightly thinned with water tahini. ANONYMOUS 2/20/2022

It's a blue cheese recipie

run-toto-run 02/03/2009 Neither myself nor my husband cared for this dip. I suppose I could blame part of the reason for this due to the fact that I used canned chicken. It was an ugly, orange greasy color. The blue cheese dressing was overpowering. If you don't love blue cheese then you might prefer the ranch dressing. Helpful (1)

That's dramatic

Allrecipes Member ✰✰✰✰ 11/25/2022 Made this horrible recipe for Thanksgiving with two chickens and they both bombed to the point of being inedible. It's the Paula Dean method of soaking everything in butter to avoid dry meat by adding 20,000 calories. First off, 75 minutes is completely inadequate time to cook chicken. It was bright pink at that time, and sitting in a 3 inch pool of butter with no ability to actually bake. I left it in for another 45 minutes to void getting salmonella poisoning, and the meat was evaporated. Gone. Like, no meat at all. I went from two extremes in one shot. It completely ruined Thanksgiving dinner and I wouldn't make this recipe again even at gunpoint. Horrible. Helpful (1)

A whole lot of words, nothing really said

ARMYCHICK8402 12/26/2006 I usually don't cook with salt. When I don't cook with salt, my dishes come out tasting great with out it. So when I made this dish, I didn't mix in the salt and I didn't like the flavor at all. The flavor was awful. But then I decided to add a little salt to it and it tasted better. So if you don't like cooking with salt, this dish is not for you. Otherwise, with the salt its ok.

3 stars

DREGINEK 09/16/2023 Made this since I am drowning in tomatoes from my garden. Used Roma. I didn't have tomato juice so I used 4c tomato broth - Knorrs' has tomato boullion cubes that you can find in most Mexican asiles (small, green and yellow box). Thought the butter was weird adding at the end so instead used half of it and simmered with some minced onions and garlic before sautéing and cooking down the tomatoes. Fresh basil is a must! While this is a GOOD recipe, I have found a few others on this site I like/prefer better. If I was short on ingredients- I would make this again as it is relatively quick and inexpensive to make (especially if you grow fresh tomatoes and basil like i am fortunate to do). Thank you MARBALET! Helpful (1)

Reading is fundamental

JS Jeanine S. 1 month ago If i could rate this lower i would... This is a not what i have been used to for America's Test Kitchen. Basically, melting a cup of chocolate chips & adding some coconut oil and a pinch of salt to make a cup of "ice cream" is a cheat i might have tried in the third grade. However, i never would have tried to claim it served 6-8!! This is close to just freezing 5 minute microwave fudge. Yeah, it can be done, but it is nowhere as good as the real thing! Hide Reply Hide Replies ATK PA Pete A. 1 month ago @Jeanine S. You somehow missed "shell coating" for ice cream in the first sentence. The picture to the right clearly shows what you are making. Essentially, it's ATK's hack version of Smucker's Magic Shell. Hide 2 Reply Scott Kathan ATK 1 month ago

Okay Mark

Mark P ✰✰ 07/09/2006 Okay. A bit chewy. I followed. another reviewer's advice and used less flour (only 2/3rds the amount) to make the gnocchi less dense. I'm not sure if this worked since I'm not positive how dense they would have been otherwise. And I have no idea if this or something else like how I kneaded the mixture caused the rubbery texture. However, when I reheated the leftovers in the microwave the next day, they were much better and no longer chewy! If they turned out like that the first day I'd have given this four stars. Incidentally, since gnocchi, like any other pasta, ought to have a sauce, I served this fairly well with a tomato-onion salsa-like mixture, and the leftovers with a spaghetti sauce.

What could have gone wrong?

nungirl 10/30/2014 It was ok. I didn't have bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, or mushrooms (it seemed weird to me to add mushroom in a chili anyway). Despite using half a cup of garlic flavor chicken broth along with the regular chicken broth and adding minced garlic, it was kind of bland. I ended up adding maybe a little too much salt to the final product. Will make again with adjustments.

3 stars for a personal error

Tephie 03/04/2013 It was pretty to look at, but I made a few mistakes with the recipe. I didn't pay attention to squeezing the tomatoes out to get rid of as much juice as possible, which made it too soupy. I also added all 1/3 cup of vinegar and it was too tangy. Only 1 out of my 5 family members liked this.

You do that

Rutylanes 11/28/2009 I did make this and thought it was too sweet. Next time I will use Spenda.

Cheese sauce

bill torbitt ✰✰✰ 12/07/2013 Tried this (with a bit of cheese sauce added), but just resulted in a big mess. At least the meat could be retrieved afterwards and was edible. How do you prevent the pastry just falling apart? Is there some kind of 'adhesive' you can use?

There are millions of recipes out there…

U user_100358882 1y ago This recipe looks good but I guess I cannot make it because I don't have electric food processor or electric mixing tools. Honestly, I wish folks would make recipes for those of us that cannot afford expensive kitchen equipment. Like, I have an oven, I don't have the other stuff. I wish you could sort recipes based on stuff like that. Reply • 33 ↑

Eating Well User 07/27/2012 Raw Eggplant in Meager Sauce My eggplant must have been too big around, because I couldn't fit more than four slices in a single layer in my 12-inch skillet or in my 8-inch baking dish. The result was raw eggplant. I also had trouble slicing the eggplant into even slices; a mandonlin slicer would have helped. Pros: Healthful ingredients Cons: Inadequate directions Helpful (0)

They can't be serious

:) Can't really rate it since I had to make changes. I was out of milk and replaced with the juice from frozen peaches mixed with water to make 1.5 cups. Had to omit eggs and sugar too. Plenty of sugar in the peach juice. It was way too thick so I also added some applesauce along with more water. Used 2 Tablespoons of baking powder and result was very fluffy healthier pancake! sportz03 4 years ago Wish I had read the reviews. No possible way it's 600ml of cream and a cup of lemonade. What a mess! Managed to save the ingredients by adding lots more flour. Ratings should be zero but it won't let me. Grandmalyn 4 years ago In reply to sportz03 Recipe says to add 250 ml cream not 600. You whip the rest. Hope this helps 9
