The Top Images From Our 2023 Memes Of The Year
2023 has been a wild year. As always, it's had its ups and downs, its controversies, its wholesome moments. But more than anything, we remember the memes this year brought to us. Every month, we select a meme of the month from our extensive catalog. More accurately, you guys select it. Based on the numerous views and votes for each of these memes, we've been able to crown a top meme for each month. For a look back on the memes that made us laugh throughout 2023, here's one of the top-voted memes from each of our top-voted memes of the month.
How Powerful Is Shrek?
Our January spot went to Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, the newest movie from the Shrek universe that brought new love for the character and showed us what a realistic panic attack looks like in an animated movie.
Pro Gamer
AI Presidents Gaming took our top spot for February 2023. This trend showed what it would be like for famous former presidents (and the current president) to game with one another, as replicated by AI voices and some entertaining Photoshopped imagery.
Still Technically a Mouse
In March, Moushely earned her fame. Basically, the internet took their obsession with Ashley Graham from the Resident Evil 4 remake and started drawing her as a mouse named Moushley. As you can probably imagine, the images they came up with were pretty concerning — here's a tame one.
ERA Epiphany
Explosive Reactive Armor is a type of armor used to protect military vehicles. For some reason, memes about it featuring Flork of Cows characters became the big meme of April 2023. It's still hard to say why exactly this trend developed, but it certainly gained a large following.
Villian Origin Story
May's top spot predictably went to "I am a surgeon, Dr. Han!" This meme comes from a painfully cringe moment of The Good Doctor, and managed to irritate the entire autistic community for its questionable portrayal of an autistic character. The memes were pretty funny, though.
Happy Birthday, Grimace
June's Grimace shake trend is definitely one of the most unforgettable of the year. From simple ironic memes about Grimace's birthday to videos of TikToks about people being possessed by the omnipotent power of the Grimace shake they just drank, this was one of the weirder trends of the year, and strangely helped McDonald's advertise their Grimace shakes.
Barbenheimer Sweep
July brought us this year's most hyped new release: Barbenheimer. This wild mashup of two very different movies, Barbie and Oppenheimer, was long-awaited and well-received by audiences, who often saw both movies in the same day, sometimes changing outfits in between to match the completely different tones of the films (or combining the two into the same outfit).
Do the Roar
It was a close call between this and the IShowMeat incident, but August's meme of the month award was given to Donald Trump's mugshot after its official release sent the internet into a huge Photoshop battle with some particularly hilarious results.
Smurf Cat Alien Mummy
Smurf Cat is an image of a cat edited to look like a smurf from all the way back in 2011. The resulting memes are pretty memorable for being maybe a little too creative, like the one above, which makes fun of one of the alleged "alien bodies" from Mexico.
Coming Soon
October's Meme of the Month Award went to offensive AI Pixar, a trend that involves forcing an AI to create posters for Pixar-style movies that should never, ever be made. As far as this one goes, it's much less offensive than some of the rest out there, so maybe heed that warning if you decide to check out more of these.
A Necessary Sacrifice
Dream vs Gumball took over online discourse for much of November. Amidst the drama between the two, Dream fans tried to defend him, while many who weren't interested in the YouTuber's work actively rooted against him.
