If you've been browsing social media lately amid the rise in looksmaxxing memes, you've likely stumbled across an instance of the "Cortisol Spike" or "Cortisol Level" meme, which is a slang phrase that references cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone.

Now, it's being used online to describe moments of sudden second-hand embarrassment, shock or psychological discomfort that either result in low or high cortisol jumps.

In meme form, the phrase is often paired with a graphic of a cortisol meter pointing from "low" to "high," indicating that someone is angry or upset. The term is also used to question if someone is trying to make you angry, or to indicate that they will not do so.

So, how did this stress hormone become the subject of so many memes lately? Let's explain.

Where Does 'Cortisol Spike' Come From?

The earliest known uses of the phrase “cortisol spike” as a meme appeared on X / Twitter in late February and early March 2025, after X user @evristainted posted a tweet featuring the text, “You’re Trying to Spike My Cortisol and Make Me Less Beautiful,” on February 26th, 2025.

The phrase was used humorously to frame stressful situations as if they were biological events rather than feelings one experiences, and referenced cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone.

"You're trying to spike my Cortisol" subsequently became a widely shared punchline and helped establish the phrase as a meme format over the following months.

By late 2025, the meme saw renewed popularity through clipped reaction videos connected to Latvian nutrition influencer and YouTuber Goatis (Sv3rige), before expanding into looksmaxxing, blackpill and meme-fusion subcultures in early 2026.

How Is 'Cortisol Spike' Used In Memes?

Throughout 2025, the phrase "Cortisol Spike" gradually evolved into a broader reaction meme format, often paired with graphics depicting a cortisol level meter labeled from “low” to “high.”

As the trend spread on TikTok, creators began repeatedly overlaying or cutting to the cortisol level meter graphic in memes, which helped standardize the meme’s format and made the visual gag instantly recognizable.

In January 2026, the Cortisol Spike meme expanded beyond simple reaction content and began circulating within looksmaxxing and blackpill communities, where cortisol is often discussed, as the hormone is considered to be highly catabolic and is perceived to have negative impacts on physical attractiveness by these communities.

Because the hormone is considered to be so destructive to one's physical appearance, avoiding a spike in cortisol is paramount for many looksmaxxers, including Australian Kick streamer and influencer Androgenic, who's gone viral alongside cortisol-related memes lately.

Several variations of the Cortisol Spike meme appeared within looksmaxxing and blackpill communities in late 2025 and early 2026, where it became intertwined with slang such as mogging.

The Cortisol Spike Meme has also experienced convergence with Agartha memes and the related Logan Paul Never StreSS meme.

Mog / Mogging

In these contexts, the cortisol meme is often used to describe the stress or insecurity someone feels when encountering a person perceived as significantly more attractive.

For example, Clavicular's cortisol would have spiked after being "Frame Mogged by ASU Frat Leader," another recently viral moment that became intertwined with cortisol memes.

Agartha

Agartha is a mythological kingdom said to be located underground. In meme culture, Agartha is typically treated ironically, with people joking about finding a "portal" to Agartha and making ironic videos referencing the fictional world.

While the Agartha meme itself doesn't directly relate to the Spiked Cortisol meme, it became subject to meme crossovers featuring the cortisol level meter in previous months.

Logan Paul Never StreSS

Logan Paul Never StreSS is a series of AI-generated video memes featuring YouTuber Logan Paul. In these edits, Paul is depicted as calm, with supposedly low cortisol levels, often contrasted with others experiencing a “cortisol spike.”

The Logan Paul meme represents yet another notable crossover between previously unrelated memes, creating a brand new template that merges the two.
