What Does The 'Juice' Emoji Mean And Is It Banned On TikTok? The Controversial Meaning Of The 'Juice Box' Emoji Explained
The seemingly innocent Juice Emoji is purportedly being banned on TikTok, and the reason why is probably not what most would expect.
The Emoji has seen a noticeable rise in usage on sites like TikTok and X / Twitter recently as a form of algospeak as a way to talk negatively about a specific group of people.
So, what does the Juice Emoji mean, why is it allegedly being banned, and how are people reacting? Here's what we know.
What Is The 'Juice' Emoji?
The Juice Emoji is an official Unicode Emoji that was added in 2019 with Emoji update version 12.0. The Emoji is pretty self-explanatory. It's a green juice box with a white, red-striped straw poking out of the top. Its intended use is to represent juice or any number of boxed beverages, but it can also be used in other ways.
Throughout the 2020s, people on sites like TikTok, X, in Twitch chats and more started using the Juice Emoji as a replacement for words like "Jews" and "Jewish."
This has been called a dog whistle by groups like the ADL, as the Emoji is sometimes used in this context to talk negatively about Jewish people without explicitly saying "Jews," allowing certain offensive opinions to thrive on social media algorithms.
How Is The 'Juice Emoji' Used Online, And Is It Banned On TikTok?
While some people use the Juice Emoji in innocent ways to refer to juice, drinks, etc., it is also being used as an antisemitic dog whistle online.
It's particularly prevalent on TikTok, where there are many videos sharing antisemitic conspiracy theories and claims that use the Emoji in place of the word "Jews." Some of these videos have hundreds of thousands of views and likes.
Recently, an X user made a post claiming that they commented a Juice Box Emoji on an undisclosed video, and it was removed by TikTok moderators. The warning, which is shared in the post, claims it was removed for referencing alcohol, but the X user is certain it's because of its use as a dog whistle.
Now, some people are posting Juice Emojis in protest of the censorship.
