This series carried on for weeks and became one of the biggest things on the subreddit, with each post getting tens of thousands of upvotes and tons of comments offering advice. It also inspired a lot of memes on the subreddit.
Then, on day 31, something happened. F1exican made his usual daily post, but another Redditor, ehsteve23, pointed out that the photo of the chives he claimed to cut that day was the same as the chives posted on day 23, just inverted and cropped.
Fans of the series saw this as a betrayal, and word spread to subreddits like /r/SubredditDrama as people turned on F1exican.
How Did 'F1exican' And Social Media React To 'Chivegate'?
When Chivegate first broke, many people were upset with F1exican. They saw the attempt to pass off the same photo of chopped chives as a new photo of chopped chives as a betrayal and wondered if F1exican could be trusted.
This resulted in a lot of memes and posts about the situation, and although many defended F1exican, many more shared their disappointment.
The incident forced F1exican to apologize in his day 32 post, claiming that he had car troubles and was unable to cut and post chives that day.
