The internet has a new way of calling people normie. If you don't know what "normie" means, it’s a slang term that’s often used in online communities to describe someone who is seen as a “normal person” with conventional tastes.
Nowadays, X users are targeting your sweet coworker, who sometimes shows you a meme or video that could be considered "normie" or cringe. In this article, we illuminate the Coworker Core meme.
Where Did The 'Coworker Core' Memes Come From?
As most of the mean just jokes on the internet are born, Twitter / X is the earliest place a viral post about being subjected to a coworker's bad taste was shared. X user @danCLYNE captioned an image in January 2020 of a man being hypnotized with, "Me being forced to watch a YouTube video a coworker thinks is funny."
In 2023, memes that perpetuated the "coworker" stereotype surfaced en masse. For example, on October 8th, 2023, X user @libralaur quoted the It's the Way You Act video with, "This the type of video ur coworker shows u and u gotta fake laugh with them," (shown below, left).
On December 26th, X user @niketotebag posted a similar tweet, quoting a clip from the Whatever Podcast with, "this is the type of video your 36-year-old coworker shows you in the break room," earning over 19,000 likes in two months (shown below, right).

Depending on the context, anything can be labeled as a "Coworker Core" type of video. For instance, On February 1st, 2024, X user @buggirl29 quoted a photo of Ned's Declassifed stars Devon Werkheiser and Lindsey Shaw with, "They have a chronic case of coworker face," (shown below, left).On February 3rd, X user @haterperson6714 quoted a video of "Historic paintings given expressions" with, "coworker core," (shown below, right).
