Initially released on August 2, 2013, the original Geometry Dash game grew in popularity, garnering over 250 million downloads worldwide. It became quite a hit amongst many people, especially the younger generation at the time, and with its simple, one-touch controls, it was effortless to get into.

Almost a decade later, the cult-classic game is still incredibly active, and its most recent update has spawned a brand new type of meme. So what is this new "Lobotomy Dash" update? Here's all you need to know.

What Is Geometry Dash?

Geometry Dash, also nicknamed "The Impossible Game" in its prime, was released for mobile devices in late 2013. Soon after, it had a PC release on Steam and has since garnered an incredible following. Despite launching with only a small handful of levels, the introduction of a level editor, which allowed users to create and design their levels, helped the game explode in popularity.

The game's popularity was further cemented by various content creators making countless videos on what was dubbed "The Impossible Game." YouTube greats like PewDiePie and Jacksepticeye would make gameplay videos on the game, which further cemented its incredible impact on video game culture and memes.

What Is Lobotomy Dash?

After lots of anticipation, the game's most recent major update was released on December 19th, 2023, and with it came a bunch of new features for the level editor that allowed users to become much more creative than ever before. "Lobotomy Dash" refers to a set of brain rot-inducing levels that features a variety of elements such as warped difficulty faces, jumpscares, and heavy visual distortions.

The very first instance of a Lobotomy Dash level was uploaded before December 22nd, titled "Lobotomy Dash," which was an edited version of the original 'Stereo Madness' level to feature many seizure-inducing elements. The level received over 214,000 downloads in the first week alone and spawned a new genre of Geometry Dash levels never seen before.

How Is Lobotomy Dash Used In Memes?

After the initial release of the first video, more and more videos started popping up across social media of users creating their own Lobotomy Dash levels. One such video includes TikTok user squishyishere_ posting a gameplay video of a Lobotomy Dash level on December 24th, captioned "Robtop died for this," which received over 500,000 views. On December 22nd, another user called kurisuuii uploaded another gameplay video, with the caption "2.2 was indefinitely made for this," garnering over 900,000 views.

These Geometry Dash levels are made to be incredibly ironic and are not meant to be taken seriously in any way. They feature a variety of headache-inducing elements that don't provide the player with an enjoyable experience. Similar to deep-fried memes, these levels are made to make the player question their sanity, while also pushing the level editor to its limits, seeing how far they can go in heavily editing a level to the point that it becomes unplayable.
