What Is The 'Get Me to God's Country' Meme? Morgan Wallen's Instagram Story After Leaving 'SNL' Explained

Country music star Morgan Wallen sparked controversy when he walked off the stage early on Saturday Night Live (SNL) over the weekend, but he also started a viral meme trend based on his cryptic Instagram Story posted shortly after, reading, "Get me to God's country."
Twitter / X and TikTok, among other social media sites, have since been jam-packed with "Get Me To God's Country" memes. The catchphrase is now a popular image caption accompanying photos of deeply American scenes, akin to Wallen's home of Nashville, Tennessee.
So, what are the "Get Me To God's Country" memes in question? Who started the trend and what has Wallen, the SNL cast and the internet at large said about it? Let's explain.

Where Did The 'Get Me To God's Country' Meme Come From?
Early on Sunday morning, country music singer Morgan Wallen walked off the stage early at SNL. He was the night's musical guest, accompanied by the host, actress Mikey Madison.
He said something to Madison and then left before the credits started rolling. It's an SNL tradition that the two guests mingle and say goodbye with the cast before the cameras finally cut.

Wallen posted a photo of a private jet to his Instagram Story soon after, adding the caption, "Get me God's country."

Meme creators saw an opportunity because Wallen's post sparked outrage, meaning that it was prime for memetic spread.
Early on Sunday, Twitter user @AlsikkanTV was the first to turn Wallen's post into a meme, adding the catchphrase to a photo of the Criterion Closet.

What Is The 'Get Me To God's Country' Meme Trend?
Since then, meme creators have been adding the catchphrase to random images. Most of the photos show settings that could be seen as holy, given the interests of the person posting it.
For Twitter user @AlsikkanTV in the original, the vast collection of movies in the Criterion Closet is their special place, meaning they're likely a film buff.
For others, Citi Field is a sacred place or an old Blockbuster before their bankruptcy. Many of these posts are caked in a layer of irony in that the scenes depicted are not always beautiful.

What Did Keenan Thompson Say About Morgan Wallen's 'Get Me To God's Country' Post?
Earlier this week, Entertainment Weekly spoke to longtime SNL cast member Keenan Thompson about Morgan Wallen's sudden departure from the stage.
He was quoted, "I don't know what goes through people's minds when they decide to do stuff like that … The 'God's country' of it all is strange because it's like, what are you trying to say? You trying to say that we are not in God's country?" Thompson's quote gained viral reactions on Twitter.

Has Morgan Wallen Addressed The Memes?
Morgan Wallen hasn't officially responded to the backlash just yet, but he did launch a new line of merch with "Get Me To God's Country" written in big text.
His decision is already being clowned on social media by some. "Love to sell hats and T-shirts about the time I was at a party and nobody liked me so I left early," wrote one Twitter user reacting to the merch.
