What Is The 'Go Girl Give Us Nothing' Meme? The Meme That Motivated Dua Lipa To Improve Her Live Performances Explained
Fans can usually dedicate their time to uplifting an artist to the point of treating them like Gods. This comes with a price, however, of putting high expectations on the celebrity to deliver quality material to satisfy its fandom. But what happens when your fans don't have this type of anticipation for your work or performance?
Well, one musician, in particular, was heavily memed by her fans back in 2018 for her spiritlessly dance moves. This is the story of how British singer Dua Lipa was bullied by her fanbase with the "Go girl give us nothing" meme.
What Is The 'Go Girl Give Us Nothing' Meme?
The "Go girl give us nothing" meme originates from Dua’s performance of “New Rules” at the 2018 Brit Awards. The singer uploaded a video of the performance on YouTube (shown below, top) and was met with criticism for her lack of dance moves and energy on the stage, with one commenter writing, “I love her lack of energy, go girl give us nothing.” (shown below, bottom)
Unfortunately for Dua Lipa, netizens and her fans loved the comment and turned it into a viral catchphrase meme on social media, commonly paired with artists as a way for fans to tease the artists. For instance, On April 2nd, 2021, YouTuber Juan Mantilla posted a video of Addison Rae titled "Addison Rae giving us NOTHING" (shown below, left). On April 19th, YouTuber icon posted a video of Selena Gomez with the title, "Go Selena, give us nothing" (shown below, right).
How Dua Lipa Reacted To The Meme?
Dua Lipa was not happy with those "Go girl give us nothing" memes. She admitted in a Vanity Fair interview in June 2021 that she was aware of the meme and that it motivated her to improve. After acknowledging the "nothing" comment, she said:
“I just wanted to make sure that this time around, I was very much in control of the fact that I’m going to do the music, then I’m going to rehearse. And then when I come in and I do the performances, they’re all going to be amazing. I’m going to prove to people that I can do this and that I’m here to stay.”
Moving forward to 2024, Dua addressed the meme again in a new interview with Rolling Stone in which she admitted it was "painful" when she saw the jokes online.
