What Is The 'I Never Told You This Before' Trend? The Viral Social Media Trend Making People Perform Absurd Pranks Explained
What starts as a seemingly sweet opportunity to compliment someone quickly turns into an excuse to give them the worst makeover imaginable in the "I Never Told You This Before" trend.
The viral social media challenge has couples, friends and family members telling each other about a supposed feature they've "always loved," only for the compliments to become increasingly ridiculous.
The trend, which emerged among Brazilian creators in July 2026, typically involves two people taking turns saying, "I've never told you this before, but I love it when you…" followed by a physical trait or style choice.
The other participant must then alter their appearance accordingly, resulting in additions like bizarre eyebrows, clown makeup, goofy pigtails or facial hair created with markers or paint.
So, where did the "I Never Told You This Before" trend come from, and how did the makeover prank spread internationally in recent weeks? Here's what we know.

Where Did The 'I Never Told You This Before' Trend Come From?
The exact creator of the trend is unknown, but some of its earliest examples appeared among Brazilian and Portuguese-speaking creators on YouTube Shorts in late July 2026.
One early example was uploaded by Brazilian influencer Mí Lopes on July 29th, 2026, featuring her participating in the challenge with her son.
The pair took turns naming increasingly strange features they supposedly loved about one another, forcing each other to add things like face paint, pigtails and beards or other facial hair as the video progressed.
The following day, prominent Brazilian creator Rafael Santos Fc uploaded a significantly more viral example featuring fellow influencer Doarda. Their version received more than 1.1 million views within roughly two weeks, helping expose the trend to a much larger audience.
Rather than actually revealing previously unspoken compliments, the joke of the trend quickly became trying to sabotage the other person's appearance.
Participants essentially attempt to one-up each other with increasingly absurd requests while being forced to accept whatever makeover their partner gives them.
How Did The 'I Never Told You This Before' Trend Spread And Become Popularized In The U.S.?
By the end of July and beginning of August 2026, the pranking trend was spreading beyond its initial Brazilian audience and appearing across YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels.
On July 30th, the YouTube channel Transicionadas uploaded a couple's version of the challenge that received tens of thousands of views in short order.
Then, on August 1st, TikTok couple andy.and.michelle posted their own take on it, garnering nearly 800,000 views in less than two weeks.

Other couples and creators joined in around the same time as it continued booming on social media. TikToker larobenz received more than 450,000 likes for an August 1st version, while Instagram user itsariannetorress participated in the trend with her boyfriend that day.
As the trend expanded internationally, its basic setup remained largely unchanged. One participant reveals something increasingly ridiculous that they supposedly "love" about the other, the person changes their appearance to match it and then gets an opportunity for "revenge" on their next turn.
By mid-August 2026, the challenge was still spreading rapidly on TikTok, with an August 11th example from TikToker zhcyt receiving more than 214,000 likes in a single day.
The combination of a wholesome-sounding premise and increasingly chaotic makeovers helped turn the format into a prank competition between couples, friends, parents and children.
