The modern state of 👀 Emoji memes actually stems from several "Void Memes" shared by Spanish-speaking Redditors from last year. The so-called "Void" is an overarching term for a glitchy, horror nightmare, similar to "Zalgo" and other old internet creepypasta motifs.
The 👀 Emoji was used in the Spanish-language memes to represent characters who had been touched by the void. The doe-eyed expression light-heartedly represented the trauma of staring into the abyss.

Where Did The 'Let's Take A Look 👀' And 'Noticing 👀' Memes Come From?
In September 2024, a user named idklol321 on the GIF-sharing website Tenor shared a GIF of Resident Evil character Leon Kennedy strangling with a Whisper text caption, reading, "Let's take a look…" The 👀 Emoji is pasted onto his face to really emphasize the look.
It's currently the first known upload of a "Let's Take A Look 👀" or "Noticing 👀" meme. A different, earlier post of the GIF has not yet been found.
However, its first known viral repost was shared by X user @derpatron6000 a few months later in December 2024.
How Is The Eyes Emoji '👀' Used In Memes?
Throughout 2025, the 👀 Emoji has slowly seeped into several image macros, memes and viral videos, acting as an exploitable element. One pivotal post in the meme's evolution was a GIF shared by X user @splorting in August 2025. It showed a cheetah with the 👀 Emoji on its face.
That was it. The tweet had no caption, just a cheetah backing away, keeping a suspicious eye on the viewer.
Since then, X user @splorting has made several 👀 Emoji GIFs, which all center on animal subjects.
The trend has spread to TikTok and Instagram Reels in recent weeks. For instance, TikToker @fujindere has shared multiple videos of their dog with the 👀 on its face.
Others have just been spamming the 👀 Emoji in text overlay captions. In one example from TikToker @shyper6467, a big cat is seen rolling around and looking at the viewer with its cartoon eyes. The hashtag "#noticing" is written overtop, followed by a string of 👀 Emojis.

The 👀 Emoji memes are only becoming more abstract, evident in a series of Reels shared by Instagram user @ananas_.nasdas, which show subjects minding their business and then, all of a sudden, a skeleton runs by them. When it does, the 👀 is added to their face as eerie music plays.
For some reason, the Instagram user has dubbed the skeleton "Carl."
