Food trends on TikTok often give users an excuse to try something new, whether that's recreating a viral recipe, visiting a restaurant or following a recommendation from another creator.

One trend that puts a different spin on food reviews asks participants to leave their usual lunch spots behind and let TikTok decide where they should eat.

Known as the "Lunch in My City Trend," the internet challenge involves searching the exact phrase "lunch in my city" in TikTok's search bar and visiting the first local restaurant that appears.

Participants then share videos of their meals, review the food and sometimes tag the businesses they visit.

But where did this challenge come from, and how did it turn into a way for local restaurants to reach new customers? Let's explain.

Where Did The 'Lunch In My City' Trend Come From?

The "Lunch in My City" trend emerged on TikTok around mid-2026 as a restaurant-discovery challenge built around the app's search algorithm.

The premise consists of participants searching the exact phrase "lunch in my city" and visiting the first local restaurant recommended in the results.

Rather than choosing a destination themselves, creators let TikTok and their fellow users determine where they will eat before documenting the experience.

The challenge appears to have developed organically, with multiple creators independently trying the format around the same time. There is no known single originator, though examples of the trend date back to at least late June 2026.

One of the earliest known examples of the trend came from TikToker @deluxeklexeats, who posted a video on June 29th, 2026, explicitly labeling the format the "lunch in my city trend," which means it presumably started sometime before this since it was already dubbed a "trend."

The video featured a mukbang of food from a local Chinese restaurant and went on to receive over 13.6 million views and 785,000 likes in four months, with the trend picking up steam in the following weeks and months.

How Did The 'Lunch In My City' Trend Spread Online?

As the challenge continued circulating throughout mid-to-late 2026, more creators began sharing their restaurant visits, introducing viewers to all sorts of neighborhood eateries and local food spots.

The trend also attracted coverage outside TikTok, including an article from Spoon University published on July 20th titled "The ‘Lunch In My City’ Trend Is Turning Everyone Into Local Food Reviewers."

On July 14th, 2026, TikTok user @tabbymoschetti joined the challenge with a video featuring a restaurant visit with her son. The post went viral, receiving over 17 million views and 790,500 likes in a little over three months.

Throughout the remainder of 2026, the challenge continued to see sporadic use, with another uptick in videos appearing in September and October.

On September 14th, 2026, TikTok user @ashyizzle shared a video highlighting sandwiches in New York City's East Village. The post received over 181,700 views and 19,800 likes in a little over a month.

On September 4th, 2026, TikTok user @b1gbimbo shared another video participating in the challenge, this time featuring a visit to Sliced Sandwiches.

The creator described it as the best lunch they had ever had and recommended the Tacoma restaurant to viewers in the area. The post received over 5 million views and 317,300 likes in about seven weeks.

@b1gbimbo i fear this was the best lunch i’ve ever had 😩🥪💗 if you’re in or near tacoma, highly recommend grabbing lunch at sliced sandwiches!! #tacomawa #eatwithme #foodreview #lunchideas #seattlefoodie ♬ Cafe Mariposa – Truckstop Clerks

As the Lunch In My City Trend saw further spread and virality heading into October, the mainstream media also picked up on it, with some restaurants even claiming it gave them a boost in sales.

For instance, Today reported on the trend on October 2nd, 2026, in an article titled "As TikTokers Take on the ‘Lunch in My City’ Challenge, Local Restaurants Are Seeing a Boost in Business."

In the article, Today spoke to various local restaurant owners about the trend, who told the news organization that the social media challenge brought in new customers and helped their businesses in the months it trended online.
