Predating the Solid Snake Method itself, the concept of the character asking unnecessary questions in the games has been discussed and memed online since at least as early as 2013.
For those who don't know, Solid Snake is the protagonist of the Metal Gear Solid series of video games by Hideo Kojima. The "method" references the way that Solid Snake talks throughout the series, joking about how frequently he repeats people's sentences.
Back in early June 2013, YouTuber Derek Lieu posted a supercut of Snake asking unnecessary questions, which included the note in the description, "Snake is CONSTANTLY asking questions that don't need asking."
Then, in October 2023, an anonymous 4chan user made a post about how they avoid awkward silences in conversation. The post reads, "I use the Solid Snake method of conversation to avoid awkward silences and keep the other person talking, aka, just repeat the last thing they said but as a question."
The post was screenshotted and reposted across social media several times that month, gaining thousands of collective likes.

Following the original viral 4chan post, other social media users started making memes about the Solid Snake Method and its effectiveness in awkward situations.
After it was reposted to the /r/196 subreddit in March 2024 to over 7,100 upvotes, TikToker @big_iron_riot even posted a video tutorial on how to talk like Snake, offering more mannerisms that people using the method can add to their repertoire.
The Solid Snake Method saw a big boost in virality in July 2025, when X user @autumnoraki_ made a post about it that went on to gain over 90,000 likes in under a day.
The post reads, "The 'Solid Snake method' of having a conversation really does work with people you don't know well. I thought it was a joke." This inspired an influx in memes and reactions to the method.
