What Is The 'Yogurt / Gurt: Yo' Meme? The TikTok Slang Terms 'Gurting' And 'Gurt' Explained

The current state of "brainrot" humor is laughing about the word "yogurt" because it sounds like a character named "Gurt" is saying, "Yo."
Does that make any sense, or are we losing our minds?
The "Yogurt" meme is everywhere on TikTok at the moment, flooding that one guy's For You page like crazy. It's manifested in a series of memes that fall under the so-called JuggTok genre, spanwing new ridiculous slang terms like "gurting."
So, where did this meme come from? What does it mean and why do people find it funny? Let's explain.

What Does 'Yogurt / Gurt: Yo' Mean?
The simple joke is a play on the word "yogurt." When someone says it, it kind of sounds like they're saying, "Yo, Gurt." The joke relies on a character named "Gurt" responding with, "Yo."
It's really silly but oddly satisfying to say.

Where Did The 'Yogurt / Gurt: Yo' Meme Come From?
The joke dates back as far as 2012, evident in non-viral tweets posted that year. It could just be a case of parallel thinking, as in, multiple people have come to the same punchline, likely just because they said, "Yogurt," and heard the hidden greeting.
The first significant use came when Twitter / X user @LILAVYVERT tweeted it in February 2022. Their post received just over 200 likes, but soon after, viral copycat tweets were shared by other accounts.

How Did The 'Yogurt / Gurt: Yo' Meme Land On TikTok?
There was a video posted at the end of last month that largely started the meme's viral craze on TikTok. It was shard by @_aboyo, showing baby versions of the Penguins of Madagascar with the joke overlayed in text.
It roughly followed the JuggTok video format, evident in its stretched frame and "overblown 808" audio, akin to underground SoundCloud rap.

The meme has since mutated, as Gurt's responses have become more elaborate and weird. He often responds back with a slang abbreviation, like "SYBAU," or an ironic misuse of "TS."
The "Yogurt" pun has also inspired other puns to be used in the format. A popular example focuses on the word "support," which sounds like a character named "Port" is being asked, "Sup?"

What Does 'Gurt' And 'Gurting' Mean On TikTok?
Originally, "Gurt" was just this cute character who was like an imaginary friend for many TikTokers. But as the meme has evolved, "gurt" and "gurting" have become their own terms—and they don't mean what one would think.
"Gurting" means, "When you do something that's very smart but also very dangerous," according to one video that speaks with authority. This is a reference to the catchphrase, "What They're Doing Is Very Smart but Also Very Dangerous," which has trended alongside the "Yogurt" meme.
