What Is The 'Dancing Toothless' Meme?

In early December 2023, YouTube animator Cas van de Pol posted a How to Train Your Dragon fan animation titled The Ultimate 'How To Train Your Dragon' Recap Cartoon. At around the minute-and-a-half timestamp, the movie's protagonist, Hiccup, snaps his giant fingers and Toothless starts dancing like nobody's watching.

The dance is actually based on an older meme known as the Dancing Lizard. This meme features a 3D-animated lizard dancing to a variety of songs. It went viral on YouTube back in 2018, inspiring a ton of edits during its time in the sun. Now, Dancing Toothless has essentially revived this meme for a new audience.

What Song Is Used In The 'Dancing Toothless' Meme?

While the song occasionally differs from video to video, the most commonly used song in Dancing Toothless memes is the "Driftveil City" theme from Pokémon: Black & White. The song was also used back in 2018 and 2019 in versions of the Dancing Lizard meme, which is probably why Cas van de Pol chose to use it in their animation.

How Is 'Dancing Toothless' Used In Memes?

The Dancing Toothless scene went viral on both YouTube and TikTok shortly after it was uploaded by Cas van de Pol. On YouTube, the scene is often remixed and edited in various ways, such as making it an hour long. On TikTok, the memes have become a little more elaborate since a green screen video isolating Toothless' dancing popped up.

TikTokers have taken to editing Toothless dancing in a variety of scenarios. Many of these edits feature comedic captions alongside his dance, including one viral example that reads, "Giving up all hope after losing sight of my mom in Walmart." Many of the memes use Toothless' dance to represent joy over something, resulting in a ton of viral examples.
