Why Are People Blaming Twitch For Emiru Being Assaulted At TwitchCon? The Outrage Over The Security Lapse Explained
Emiru, one of Twitch's biggest streamers and female creators, was assaulted in a highly controversial incident, which many are claiming was a massive lapse of security, at TwitchCon 2025 during a meet-and-greet event in San Diego, California.
A now viral video shows a tall male attendee breezing through security and grabbing the streamer before attempting to kiss her non-consensually, with security only intervening after the man had grabbed her.
The incident has set off a firestorm of backlash against TwitchCon organizers and Twitch itself, with internet users finding older stream clips of Emiru talking about her apprehensions over doing the event, and even discussing how her "favorite" security guard was banned from TwitchCon despite preventing a similar incident two years ago.
Here's a recap of all that's happened with the assault of Emiru at TwitchCon 2025, and why some are claiming it could be the end of TwitchCon as we know it.
Who Is Emiru, and What Happened With Her At TwitchCon 2025?
If you're unaware of her, Emiru, whose real name is Emily-Beth Schunk, is a prominent streamer and cosplayer with a considerable Twitch presence of nearly 2 million followers on the platform, best known for her League of Legends content and involvement in the creator collective One True King (OTK).
On the opening day of TwitchCon San Diego 2025, she was participating in a meet-and-greet event when a male attendee approached her on stage, grabbed her, and appeared to lean in for a kiss without her consent.
The seemingly lone security guard who appears pushes the attacker off the streamer moments later, and the man is shown to simply walk off after the incident.
A short clip of the incident was posted on X / Twitter by user @BaconCrumbz that same day and was later shared to the subreddit /r/LivestreamFails, where it garnered outrage from thousands of viewers and users in short order.

A particular topic that came up amid the backlash was the perceived failure of the convention's own security, which was made even worse as discourse began spreading that streamers, such as Emiru herself, were not allowed to bring private security or bodyguards.
Additionally, Emiru's past story of her "favorite" security guard being banned from TwitchCon for purportedly doing his job at an older Twitch event reemerged, adding fuel to the fire.
Why Was Emiru’s Favorite Security Guard Banned From TwitchCon?
Prior to this incident, Emiru had publicly spoken in streams about a situation two years earlier when her preferred security guard was barred from attending TwitchCon.
According to clips shared online, notably by Redditor No-Friendship-5311 in the /r/LivestreamFails subreddit, she said this guard had physically restrained a man who was stalking her at a previous event, and was banned from the venue for physically intervening.

Other Redditors, like dashieman66, posted clips of Emiru and her fellow Twitch streamers talking about how Emiru felt contractually obligated to appear despite her safety reservations, and how Twitch had told her to attend the meet and greet if she also wanted to do her show at the convention.

How Did Twitch Respond To The Incident?
On October 18th, 2025, Twitch issued a statement acknowledging the assault and stressing that "the behavior displayed by the individual involved in the incident … was completely unacceptable and deeply upsetting."
They confirmed that, in line with existing TwitchCon security protocols, law enforcement and event security had responded, the individual was immediately blocked from returning to the premises and was banned indefinitely from Twitch. Notably, the statement did not mention Emiru by name.
But Emiru had a different account of what took place at TwitchCon, and in a statement also issued on October 18th, she wrote, "I don't understand how he was allowed to make it to me in the first place. The security in the clip who reacts is my own security […] However, there were at least 3 or 4 other Twitchcon security staff in the area who did not react and let the guy walk away."
She alleged that her assaulter was not "immediately" apprehended, and that "Twitch security were also behind the booth afterward joking about how they didn't even see what happened."
Later that day, Emiru then responded to the incident and Twitch's response during a livestream, notably criticizing the company's initial decision to only ban the assailant for 30 days.
