The idea of Mbappé being a dictator is rooted in the way he handles criticism and detractors by perceivably trying to "silence" them. Later that year, the first edit of Mbappé as a dictator, Chinese leader Mao Zedong, was posted to Reddit.

The nickname and meme went further viral in 2026 when Real Madrid parted ways with manager Xabi Alonso. Rumor had it that Mbappé got Alonso canned after refusing Real Madrid a guard of honor, although this was purportedly nothing more than a rumor.
