Some are even under the impression that Stafford has been cloned by the NFL, following a recent video of the injury-prone athlete finally arriving at practice for the Rams' upcoming season.

The whole theory is a bit absurd, but it's generating a lot of viral posts, memes and tweets, springboarding the NFL meme sphere ahead of the 2025-2026 regular season.

The idea that Matthew Stafford has moved on from this life was seemingly started by a Twitter user named @doulbedoink, who posted a tweet last week, simply stating, "Matt Stafford has been dead for 3 weeks #StaffordDiedWeeksAgo."

The user spread their theory in the following days across a series of tweets, propelling their original hashtag into the NFL meme lexicon. An earlier tweet, speculating about Stafford's demise, has not been found.

Why Are People Saying That 'Matthew Stafford Died Weeks Ago?'

This NFL offseason, L.A. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has reportedly been suffering from back issues that have largely kept him away from practice. Thus, it's been a worrisome summer for Rams fans, who've read harrowing report after report about their star QB.

This came to a head last week on social media, when it was reported that Stafford went into a "mobile rejuvenation chamber" instead of practicing with the team at the beginning of the 2025 NFL preseason.

The futuristic chamber – which looked like an Airstream, according to some internet comedians – seemed like a bad omen for Stafford's health and L.A.'s playoff hopes. At least, it was a perfect place to clone and respawn a Stafford homunculus that would fully coagulate before Week 1, or so the memes foretold.

This past week, the "Matthew Stafford Died Weeks Ago" theory has only evolved and ballooned, seemingly peaking after a video of Stafford at his first 2025-2026 practice was shared online by the Rams' Twitter.

A user named @CoachLewGrizz quote-tweeted the video, joking that it was a "deepfake" and thus "disrespectful to his memory and to his family."

The jury's still out on whether or not Stafford has been doubled, following in the footsteps of other famous celebrity "cloned" theories about pop star Taylor Swift and rapper Kanye West, just to name a few.
