The gaming industry has been getting quite a lot of flak lately for its controversial moves and profit-driven decisions, axing fan-favorite franchises and upcoming games still in development that were highly anticipated.

That being said, not even 84 years of arguably the most famous female superhero was enough to stop Warner Bros. Discovery from canceling Wonder Woman's long-awaited game, which had been in production for three years by Monolith Productions.

The company also confirmed plans to shut three of its gaming development studios, Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego — adding further fuel to the backlash.

Even before the official cancelation announcement, fans of Wonder Woman's video game were already suspecting something was wrong in the production, as three years had passed by and not a single gameplay trailer, inside look or any detail about the project was revealed.

The only update shared happened in early February 2025 after tabloids revealed the Wonder Woman game based on the beloved DC Comics character had been rebooted during development and was "still years away from release."

Here's what we know about Wonder Woman's canceled game and how fans reacted on social media.

Why Did Warner Bros. Discovery Decide to Cancel The Wonder Woman Game?

Warner Bros. Discovery's decision to cancel the Wonder Woman game was driven by strategic shifts to boost profitability in other upcoming projects and gaming studios.

The news was revealed in late February 2025 by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier in a post on Bluesky claiming Warner Bros. was "canceling the Wonder Woman game," as well as "shutting down Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego."

According to a company spokesperson, the organization told BBC Newsbeat the "difficult decision" was aimed "to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities."

Warner Bros. also explained it will shift its gaming focus toward developing core and reliable franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones.

What Was The Wonder Woman Game?

Wonder Woman's standalone game was announced in early December 2021, promising to be a single-player, open-world action game featuring an original story as players star as Diana in a "fight to unite her Amazon family and the humans from the modern world."

During its development, Monolith Productions allegedly implemented its highly praised "Nemesis System" (made famous in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor) in the Wonder Woman game, which would function as a system that tracks your encounters with different enemies and as you progress in-game, those enemies grow and gain more power.

How Did Fans and the Internet React To the Wonder Woman Game Cancellation?

The announcement of the upcoming Wonder Woman game getting the axe from Warner Bros. sent shockwaves through social media, leading to massive outrage and frustration from fans who felt that the decision undervalued one of the most significant female superheroes in history.

For instance, earlier this week, X user @quaketano wrote, "The fact that Wonder Woman is actually the most iconic female superhero but gets this kind of treatment should be considered a crime."

Sadly, for some super fans, the canceled project meant no more jokes or anticipation to play the iconic hero, as Redditor u/RailfanTransitFan posted the How Do We Tell Him? meme to the /r/WonderWoman subreddit, commenting about a someone who promised to draw the character every day until her game comes out.
