Welcome back to the weekly meme roundup, where we dive headfirst into the best memes of the past week, much like a cave diver entering the smallest hole possible for no good reason.

If your algorithm somehow kept you away from all the cave diver memes, maybe it bombarded you with sad videos about that anglerfish that died or memes about the things your outie likes. If you're a Deltarune fan, maybe you joined your fandom in extreme coping with the "Deltarune tomorrow" memes.

Whatever trends and memes you saw or didn't see this week, here are five of the biggest from the week that you need to catch up on.

The Anglerfish That Swam to the Surface and Died

Social media has been an outright wreck lately over the death of an anglerfish that swam to the surface of the ocean and then reportedly died.

The video of the anglerfish swimming to the surface was uploaded online earlier this month and went viral on multiple platforms. What makes the video special is how rare it is for a deep-sea fish like this to swim all the way to the surface. The beautiful video captured the hearts of many, even if it was unclear why the fish made its journey to the surface.

Then, days later, it was reported that the anglerfish died hours after the recording. When a research team examined the fish, they found that it was injured, which is probably why it swam to the surface. Queue the tears of everyone on social media.

News of the anglerfish's death spread fast, inspiring an outpouring of artwork and memes celebrating and mourning the creature. These tributes to the fish ranged from comics about the fish seeing the sun before its death and warnings about the dangers of climate change to videos of people bawling their eyes out over the incident.

It also inspired a viral post about the actual size of anglerfish, teaching many that they're a lot smaller than you might think. At least some good came out of this.

Deltarune Tomorrow

Fans of the Deltarune video game series took coping to the next level this week when they began repeating the mantra "Deltarune tomorrow" across the internet, despite nobody knowing when the next two chapters of the game are coming out.

Last year, Deltarune's developer, Toby Fox, let fans know that Deltarune: Chapters 3 and 4 would be released in 2025, offering no solid release date. It's been a long time coming, with the last chapter of the game releasing way back in 2021.

The fans got tired of waiting a long time ago, so now, with the vague promise of a 2025 release, every day that passes without a release seems to bring them another step closer to becoming The Joker. This all came to a head recently when the fandom turned the phrase "Deltarune tomorrow" into a meme.

The idea behind the meme seems to be that, by saying "Deltarune tomorrow" every day, the game will eventually be released the day after someone posts the phrase. Therefore, it will eventually be correct.

They're basically using the phrase to try and will the game into releasing and they're doing it through memes, fan art and social media posts. Have the Silksong fans tried this yet? Oh, they've been trying it for years? Got it.

Hostile Government Takeover Song

A TikToker who sang a very catchy song about the U.S. being in a "hostile government takeover" went viral this week, becoming a major earworm for a huge corner of the internet.

The song is originally by TikToker @agiftfromtodd, and it comes from a video he recorded and posted on his way out the door to work.

In the song, he beautifully sings, "We're in the middle of a hostile government takeover, I wanna talk about it but I’ll be late for work." It's simple, it's catchy, and it got stuck in the heads of many people who heard it, resulting in some very popular remixes on TikTok.

Many of these videos have musicians take the lyrical portion of the video and add music over it in real time. Others are simply using the song as a backing track to politically related memes and videos.

Listen, nobody wants to be in the middle of a hostile government takeover, but if you can make the idea into a catchy song, then you might as well enjoy it a little bit.

Your Outie Likes X

Hey, have you watched Severance yet? As if your coworker hasn't asked you enough times already, the whole internet is now demanding you watch Severance as the show gets its first major meme with the "Your Outie Likes X" format.

In Severance (which I also have not seen yet) every person who works at this company has their memories divided into work and personal lives, with their "innie" being their work personality and their "outie" being the personal one.

In one scene from the second episode of the series, the character Ms. Casey tells Irving's innie about the things his outie likes. This is the basis for the meme, "Your outie likes X."

As a meme, "X" is replaced with something funny that your outie likes. One of the earliest examples is an X / Twitter post reading, "Your outie can freestyle for hours, you can even show him objects around the room and he'll incorporate it into his raps."

The memes quickly made their way from X to TikTok, resulting in memes about finding out your outie is, say, a total loser. It's a pretty versatile format and it works pretty well to give those unfamiliar with the show a slight understanding of what it's about.

Cave Diver Memes

Finally, one of the biggest trends of the week saw people across social media making memes about cave divers (or spelunkers), who seem to just love getting stuck in inescapable holes.

The memes are largely inspired by the Nutty Putty cave incident, which saw John Edward Jones get stuck diagonally, face-down in a crevice for 27 hours before dying. That's about as grim a situation as you can get, but the diagram of how Jones was stuck is admittedly pretty funny.

The diagram first started going viral in late 2023, but recently, TikTokers took it to the next level by making jokes about cave divers getting stuck anywhere and everywhere.

These memes tend to feature a caption about a cave diver attempting to go through a ridiculously small space only to get stuck. The punchline involves putting a pair of shoes upside down over the entrance of the "cave" to resemble Jones' feet sticking out of that tight Nutty Putty cave hole.

It's creative, it's fun and hopefully, it makes wannabe cave divers a little more cautious before they go diving into a mysterious hole in the ground. It probably won't, but we can hope.
