The story of a Florida bookshop with a very peculiar salesman, a cat named Peter, is getting some much-deserved attention online.

A video of the kitty cashier shared on social media recently is going viral for showing Peter performing his various duties in the bookshop. Peter’s story in the post has since earned hundreds of thousands of views, as well as tens of thousands of likes.

Jenn Crumm, who goes by @thatgoodnewsgirl on Instagram and TikTok, is a content creator dedicated to telling fun stories and good news that often involve cute animals.

In many of the stories she tells, the animals are usually doing something unexpected of them, which always makes for a fun twist in the tale.

So, the story in her latest viral video was right up her alley.

The Old Florida Book Shop, located in Fort Lauderdale, is home to Peter, a curious cat who spends his days exploring the library and sometimes takes payments from people who want to buy the books on the shelves located outside the bookshop.

"There’s a bookstore in Florida where you can purchase a book at any hour of the day by slipping your payment to the kitty cashier through the door," Crumm said at the beginning of her video.

"You just choose from the assortment of one-dollar books on the shelves outside the store and Peter the cat will be glad to accept your payment with a swipe of his paw," she explained, showing footage of the cat accepting someone’s cash payment.

"Cashier duties are just one part of Peter’s job at the Old Florida Bookshop in Fort Lauderdale," Crumm continued, "a one-of-a-kind shop packed with rare and antique books collected over the last forty years."

"When he’s not working the register, Peter spends his days conducting inventory checks," she said, showing footage of Peter walking on a railing that goes along the bookshelves, "by scaling the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves using the store’s rolling ladder tracks."

"He takes his role as supervisor seriously," Crumm added, with the closed captions jokingly saying "supurrvisor" instead, "often perching from above to keep an eye on customers with both vigilance and mild judgement."

But that’s not the end of Peter’s duties at the bookshop. "When shipments arrive, Peter handles quality control by thoroughly inspecting each box, and occasionally trying them out for a nap," she jokingly noted.

"Between tasks, he returns to his official office, one of his decorative bowls, where a label confirms what everyone already knows: That Peter is just the best boy," she added, showing a picture of a label that reads "Peter is the best boy."

"Finally, after a long day of assisting customers, climbing ladders and generally keeping the store running smoothly, Peter clocks out by sprawling out across an antique rug in pure bliss," showing a picture of the cat doing just that.

"He’s been with the shop for years now," Crumm stated, "and he doesn’t seem to have any plans to retire anytime soon."

The video’s commenters were delighted to hear Peter’s story and watch him doing his job.
