Woman Takes Her Scrapbooking-Obsessed Mom To Hobby Lobby For Advice, And She Does Not Disappoint
Years of scrapbooking experience came in handy when a woman accompanied her daughter to Hobby Lobby to help plan a layout for a photograph.
As they browsed the store, the mother offered detailed advice on choosing colors, patterns and decorative elements that would complement the image, demonstrating her knowledge of the craft.
The wholesome interaction subsequently went viral online, garnering over 10.9 million views on TikTok in the last couple of weeks.
The video was shared by Amanda Patterson, a Utah-based nail technician and social media content creator who frequently documents her everyday life with her husband and daughter. Her TikTok account also features videos about her interest in scrapbooking, a hobby she shares with her mother.
Although Patterson had been regularly posting personal and creative content, the Hobby Lobby video marked her first major viral video on the platform.
Patterson's mother has an extensive background in the craft, having previously owned a scrapbook store and spent years teaching others how to create their own layouts. Recognizing her expertise, Patterson decided to bring her along on a shopping trip to get some guidance for her latest project.
What began as a routine search for crafting supplies became an opportunity to showcase her mother's knowledge and enthusiasm, with their exchange offering viewers a glimpse into the creative process behind traditional scrapbooking.

"Giving my mom a photo to make a layout part two," Patterson writes on her video as it begins. She films her mother's hands in a Hobby Lobby aisle as she holds up a photo of two babies in hats and long-sleeved swimsuits on a beach. She is holding it against two sheets with different shades of blue.
"The difference," she says, showing Patterson the photo against a light blue sheet, "just blends and washes them out," she says, before sliding the sheet away so that the photo is held up against the darker blue sheet, "that pops."
"Yeah," Patterson says, as her mother slides the lighter colored sheet back between the photo and the other sheet.
"See how that does that?" she says, sliding the sheet out again.
"Yeah," Patterson agrees.
"Pink, blue, the green," Patterson's mother says, pointing to different parts of the photo that display those colors. "You've got the denim," she says, pointing at one of the babies' hats. "Could use a water as an accent somewhere," she continues, holding the photo against a sheet with a water design, and Patterson agrees.
"You could use this as a background because it's not too busy," Patterson's mother continues, holding up a blue sheet with white details that make it reminiscent of water. "The photo pops out on this one," she says, holding up a sheet similar to the last one, only with a darker blue. "You get lost on that one," she says, sliding the sheet out to compare it to the previous one.
"Something like this," Patterson's mother suggests, bringing in a white sheet with a blue, tiny square pattern.
"Oh, too busy," Patterson expresses.
"For a background," her mother agrees, "You want it as an accent? Could use it as an accent," she says.
"Are you gonna go off of his stripes?" she continues, pointing at the baby boy's swimsuit, "You gonna go off of her flowers?" she asks, pointing at the baby girl's swimsuit.
"Are you gonna go more pinks? You gonna go more blues?" she continues, asking, "With a splash of green that you could pick up here," she says, pointing at a green toy that the baby girl is holding in the picture, "We also got the sky," she adds, pointing at it.
"You see how it has light, so it makes it look like water," Patterson's mother says, holding up and pointing to a sheet with a water-like design. "So that's a fun one. I would not use it as a background," she clarifies, holding up the photo against it, "I would just use a little splash of it."
"The glitter paper," she says, sliding a blue glittery sheet between the photo and the previous sheet, "'Cause it kind of shimmers like a swimming pool water," she says, before testing a similar sheet in a lighter shade of blue.
"Well, it's pretty cool," Patterson says.
Then, Patterson's mother holds up two more normal-looking sheets; one blue and one green. "You could do blue and green cause they're analogous. Means they're next to each other on the color wheel. And they go together very well," she explains, pointing between the sheets.
"Bring in a pop of the green. It's in her suit. It's also in her little turtle. Right?" Patterson's mother says, pointing towards the baby girl's swimsuit and toy. Still holding the green and blue sheets, Patterson's mother now brings in a sheet with horizontal blue and white stripes.
"That clashes with his swimsuit, though?" Patterson says.
"No," her mother says, "I don't love the stripe, but I don't hate it," she says.
Then, Patterson's mother holds up one of the water designs from before against the plain blue sheet, putting the photo in the middle.
"I like it," Patterson says.
"So I would do this," her mother says, "For the daughter, probably bring in just a little bit of pink," she says, holding up a dark pink sheet, "to add to different spots in the pad, journal squares and things like that."
The video then cuts to Patterson's mother holding up a roll of green tape. "And then as well, you could use this on your water page and do a thin green border, just to bring in that green color that was on that turtle," she explains.
"This cute one with all the little daisies," she says, picking up another roll of tape, this time with a design of different colored flowers.
"Oh, that's cute," Patterson says.
"A cute little border," her mother says, before picking up another roll of tape, this time pink. "Look at that," she says, pointing at it.
"Oh, that's cute," Patterson says again.
"Zigzag," her mother says, putting it back on the shelf, "Very cute. And they've got them in little, teeny, tiny-" she says, pointing to other tapes with designs in lighter pink, before the video cuts off.
"Time to put it together," Patterson writes on the video as these last seconds play, "Stay tuned for the final page," she adds.
In the comments, people praised Patterson's mother's design skills and suggestions, with many calling for her to create her own TikTok account and make videos giving scrapbooking advice.
Patterson also showed the scrapbook layout she created following her mother's advice:
