A minor bathroom accident turned into an unexpected renovation project after a woman's soap dispenser broke her sink, exposing years of accumulated grime underneath.

What initially appeared to be a simple repair quickly expanded into a larger undertaking, with the homeowner deciding to replace not only the damaged sink but also the toilet and linoleum flooring.

Footage of the discovery and subsequent renovations has since gone viral, with the video garnering over 2.6 million views on Instagram and 1.4 million on TikTok over the last month.

The renovation was documented by Ashton, a social media content creator known online as Ashton Bought A House, who has been chronicling her experience restoring and decorating a century-old home.

Her videos primarily focus on the challenges and discoveries involved in maintaining an older property, from cleaning neglected spaces to making improvements throughout the house. She also shares occasional glimpses of her everyday life with her dog.

Ashton began documenting her home restoration journey back in August 2026, attracting widespread attention with several videos in the months that followed.

Her latest viral post highlights the unexpected complications that can arise when renovating an older home, as an ordinary household mishap revealed unsanitary conditions that had previously gone unnoticed for who knows how long.

Rather than simply repairing the initial damage, Ashton used the discovery as an opportunity to overhaul the bathroom, turning an inconvenient accident into another chapter of her ongoing restoration project.

Here's what happened in the viral video.

@ashtonboughtahouse you’d think after 2 months of living here i’d be done finding surprises but nah LMAO #cleanhouse ♬ original sound – ashton.

The post starts with Ashton filming her broken sink as she removes a big piece of porcelain that has broken off.

"I accidentally opened a portal to hell," she says in the voiceover, turning around the broken-off piece and showing its grimy underside. "Oh, wait, that's just the inside of my pedestal sink," she adds, showing the piece along with the rest of the sink.

The part the piece broke off is now an opening which shows even more grime inside the sink. "Don't watch this video if you're eating. You've been warned," Ashton adds.

“So I dropped my heavy, campy, ceramic soap dispenser, which is, of course, in the shape of a dachshund," she says, showing said dispenser. "And it cracked my sink. I didn't even drop it from that high, but for some reason it gave the sink the people's elbow," she explains, showing the broken section.

"And once I saw that Satan's paper mache was under there," Ashton continues, showing the grime inside the sink. "I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep. So despite having absolutely no idea what I was doing, I ripped it out of there immediately," she says, as she does so in the video.

"And I figured while I was at it, I'd also change out the toilet, because although I'd cleaned all the accessible parts of it, it was still disgusting," Ashton says, showing sections of the toilet.

"And this comment from Alice on my toilet tank deep clean video really sealed the deal for me," she continues, showing a comment from a Facebook user named Alice Willer, which reads, "Wow elite work. I am pretty sure I would have used the emergency account and bought a new character toilet. God speed cleaning champion!"

"It was the right decision," Ashton says as she removes the toilet in the video, "'cause this toilet and this wax ring are just not the type of things I want in my living space," she adds, showing how grimy the wax ring and the floor underneath the toilet had gotten, and proceeding to clean it.

"Truth be told, I've never seen a wax ring before," she admits. "I've never seen what's underneath the toilet. So maybe this is what the wax ring is supposed to look like. But either way, it grossed me right out," she says, as she removes those final parts.

"Then when I really got in there," Ashton continues, showing herself working close to the floor and then lifting the linoleum, "I saw that the linoleum was, A, not even glued down in some places, and B, disgusting because it was not glued down in some places. So, I ripped it all out."

"After that, I forgot to film everything cause I'm an idiot," Ashton adds, showing an image of her bathroom with a new sink, new toilet, and new flooring surrounding the toilet, "But I had a plumber come in and help me replace those two fixtures."

"And I put down some very questionable peel-and-stick vinyl flooring that has a marble pattern that does not line up," she adds, showing the flooring now fully installed.

"Do I hate it? Yes," Ashton states. "Is it functional and it will work for now? Also, yes," she adds.

"Shout out to my soap dispenser for being a real girls' girl and helping to uncover that hellscape that was secretly existing in my sink," Ashton says, filming said soap dispenser again, now standing on her new sink.

"By the way, I didn't replace the tub, but it looks like I might have to because there's some sort of hairy creature living in it?" Ashton says, filming the bathtub where her dog is sitting, the top of its head peeking out and peering at her.

"Kinda cute, though. Might keep it. Anyway, bye for now," she finishes, filming herself in her bathroom mirror.

In the comments, many people compared the sequence of events in the video to the children's story If You Give A Mouse A Cookie, while others joked about fixing it with ramen noodles.

Some users also thanked Ashton for her warning at the start of the video, as they were just starting to eat.

Other commenters congratulated Ashton on how she handled the situation and gave her some advice on how to continue caring for the bathroom.
