The madman has finally done it.

After years of producing some of the most cinematic — not to mention bananas — video games ever, Hideo Kojima is making a movie. It was announced today that the gaming auteur is partnering with A24 to make a Death Stranding movie.

Death Stranding movie announcement

Players of Death Stranding may remember it as Kojima's most cinematic and narratively wild game yet, while much of the gameplay involved walking. To say the story concerns Sam Porter acting as a delivery man in a post-apocalyptic America with a baby strapped to his chest both adequately explains the premise and barely scratches the surface of the wild directions Death Stranding takes.

Kojima sounds characteristically ambitious about the project, saying in a statement,

"There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born."

The comments echo the comments Kojima and Jordan Peele made at the recent Game Awards, when the pair said of their new game OD, which they said would be both a "game" and "at the same time a movie and at the same time a new form of media."

The announcement led to an expectation of quite the spectacle — whether that spectacle is good or a spectacular trainwreck.

Death Stranding anticipation. Annoying day in cinema history

As of now, it's unknown if Kojima will actually direct the movie, nor if the game's star-studded cast will return to reprise their roles in the movie. Considering the historically cryptic rollouts of Kojima-related projects, it's safe to assume we won't know more about the movie for some time.
